What Juicer Do I Need?

When you’re starting a juicing business, your juicer will be your #1 investment. Choosing the right juicer is a balance between how many juices you can sell, how much time you have to make juice, and how much money you’re able to invest.

Juicers can be categorized into three types: Centrifugal Juicers, Slow Juicers, and Hydraulic Press Juicers (also known as Cold-Pressed Juicers).

Type 1: Centrifugal


This is the most common type of juicer. It can juice almost anything that is edible and chewable with human teeth. However, it can’t process wheatgrass due to its texture. It’s readily available at a reasonable price, works quickly, and is easy to clean. However, it cuts your fruits and vegetables at high speed—up to 30,000 RPM (Rotations per minute). The downside? Fresh juice oxidizes faster, which affects its quality, so it should be consumed immediately. While this juicer is great for juice bars where customers drink immediately, it may not be ideal for a delivery business where juice needs to last longer.

Type 2: Slow Juicer


This juicer is perfect for processing fruit, vegetables, leafy greens like wheatgrass, and herbs. Most slow juicers operate around 80 RPM, crushing and then squeezing the juice. The benefits? You get a “living juice” that can be stored for up to 48 hours while retaining its nutritional integrity. There are two types of slow juicers: vertical and horizontal. The vertical ones were created to offer the speed of centrifugal juicers, with the high juice quality of a slow juicer. These juicers tend to be faster and have larger openings, meaning you don’t have to chop your produce into tiny pieces, making preparation easier.

Type 3: Hydraulic Press / Cold-Pressed


If you’re serious about offering the highest quality juice, a hydraulic press is the way to go. This machine works in two steps: First, it shreds everything into small pieces. Then, these pieces are placed in a mesh bag and pressed until all the juice is squeezed out. The result? Very dry pulp! If you plan to make a lot of juice, this machine will pay for itself by extracting much more juice from your produce.

Commercial vs Home (Residental)


All three types are available for both home and commercial use. When starting a small juicing business, you might be tempted by the lower price tag of home-use juicers. There are plenty of small businesses that begin this way, but it’s important to understand the differences between commercial and home juicers.

Commercial Juicers Are Bigger
Commercial juicers are larger to handle a high volume of customers. In a professional kitchen, you need equipment that can keep up with a continuous flow of orders, or production and efficiency will be compromised.

Build Quality
Commercial juicers are built for constant use. Home-use juicers have warranties of around five years on the motor, but they’re not made for the demands of a juicing business. If you use a home juicer for 10 hours a day, it might break down after just two months. On the other hand, commercial juicers are designed for long-term durability and continuous operation.

Yield
Commercial juicers are designed to maximize juice yield. While home juicers tend to clog up after extensive use, reducing juice extraction, commercial juicers handle large quantities of produce efficiently, extracting more juice overall.

When you’re starting out. You need to start somewhere. Not everyone can afford a commercial juicer in the beginning.
You can except that it’s not that efficient or that it will break down after 60 days, you can always buy a second one. But there’s one more important perspective that’s often forgotten.

How long do you want to be in the Kitchen?


Making juice takes time. If you want to make 100 bottles a day with a slow juicer, it could take up to 10 hours in the kitchen. You’ll need to feed produce into the juicer piece by piece and clean it frequently due to clogging. This limits how many orders your business can handle.

We’ve learned that a hydraulic press, or cold-pressed juicer, is the best choice for starting a juicing business and bottling juice.
Investing in the right juicer is a balance between how many juices you can sell, how much time you want to spend in the kitchen, and how much money you can invest.
